I wouldn't be totally wrong if I say that many people tend to make mistake when it comes to differentiating between 'TEND' and 'INTEND'.

TEND और INTEND दोनों ही transition verbs हैं इसलिए ज़्यादातर लोग इन्हे एक दूसरे के स्थान पर use करने की गलती करते हैं।
Even though they are quite close to each other, one should never use these two interchangeably.
ऐसा करने से वाक्य का अर्थ पूरी तरह से बदल सकता है।

TEND
'Tend' शब्द को आसानी से समझने के लिए इसे 'tendency' से जोड़ क्र देखा जा सकता है।
Tendency का अर्थ है किसी प्रकार की प्रवृती, रुझान, झुकाव या इच्छा।
While expressing some kind of tendency towards something, we always use 'tend to'
TENDENCY TOWARDS = TEND(s) TO
| TEND TO = used to show an inclination toward a particular characteristic or type of behaviour. |
Let's understand with the help of some examples:
UNINTENTIONAL NATURE OR HABIT
• British English tends to be formal. (ब्रिटिश अंग्रेज़ी औपचारिक होती है।)
• People tend to eat more during the winter season. (लोगों को सर्दियों के मौसम में अधिक खाना खाते हैं।)
यहां 'tend to' के use से हमें यह पता चलता है कि England में बोली जाने वाली English language by default ही ज़्यादा formal होती है और सर्दी के मौसम में naturally ही ज़्यादा खाने की भूख लगती है।
Some more examples:
• Things tend to get lost when you move house. (जब आप अपना घर बदलते हैं तो चीज़ें खो जाती हैं।)
• People tend to accept adversities as a part of life. (लोग प्रतिकूल परिस्थितियों को जीवन का एक हिस्सा मान स्वीकार कर लेते हैं।)
One can also use it to show negative tendency or an unlikely behaviour.
नकारात्मक भाव को दर्शाने के लिए 'tend not to' का use किया जाता है :
• People tend not to like to wait. (लोग इंतजार करना पसंद नहीं करते हैं।)
• Lazy people tend not to exercise. (आलसी लोग व्यायाम नहीं करते हैं। )
INCLINATION OF THOUGHT TOWARDS SOMETHING
Tendency का एक अर्थ किसी चीज़ के प्रति इच्छा या झुकाव होना भी होता है।
Thus, you can also use it to express preferences.
• I tend to agree with her opinions this time. (मैं इस बार उनके विचारों से सहमत हूं।)
• They tend to play Cricket more than football. (वे फुटबॉल से ज्यादा क्रिकेट खेलते हैं)
यहाँ दोनों ही वाक्यों में एक तरह से इच्छा को व्यक्त किया जा रहा है।
TO TAKE CARE OF OR ATTEND TO (a person or some work)
There is a slight difference in such cases. यहाँ पर 'tend' के साथ 'to' का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है।
• Part of a doctor's vocation is to tend the sick with conscientiousness.(सभी रोगियों की ईमानदारी से देखभाल करना एक चिकित्सक के पेशे का अहम हिस्सा है। )
• My mother tends the plants with utmost care.(मेरी माँ पौधों की अत्यंत सावधानी से देखभाल करती हैं।)
In case of managing the work, it's mostly used in the context of a bar:
• I was tending bar that night. (उस रात मैं बार चला रहा था। )
• Some aspiring movie stars tend bar to make ends meet. (कुछ महत्वाकांक्षी फिल्म सितारे गुज़ारा करने के लिए बार चलाते हैं।)
TO MOVE IN A PARTICULAR DIRECTION
Figurative या literal sense में किसी विशेष दिशा की ओर रुख होना या जाना दर्शाने के लिए भी 'tend to' का नहीं बल्कि केवल 'tend' का use किया जाता है।
• His arguments always tend in the same direction. (उसके तर्क हमेशा एक ही दिशा में होते हैं।)
• Most of us want to tend towards a peaceful life. (हम में से अधिकांश एक शांतिपूर्ण जीवन की ओर रुख करना चाहते हैं।)
INTEND
| INTEND is supposed to have originated from the French word “intendere” which means “to stretch towards” or “to aim at.” |
जिस तरह tend का अर्थ tendency से मेल खाता है, उसी तरह intend का अर्थ INTENTION से मिलता जुलता है।
यदि आप सोच समझ कर किसी कार्य को करने का इरादा, प्रयास या प्रयोजना करते हैं, तब हम उस कार्य को दर्शाने के लिए 'intend to' का use करते हैं।
Intend to can be used in following contexts:
SOMETHING PLANNED AS PER ONE'S INTENTIONS, IDEA OR THOUGHT
अपने इरादों या सपनों को पूरा करने की इच्छा यानि intention जताने के लिए:• She intends to write a novel in the future. (वह भविष्य में एक उपन्यास लिखना चाहती है।)
• The company intends to cut 400 jobs in near future. (कंपनी निकट भविष्य में 400 नौकरियों में कटौती करने का इरादा रखती है।)
• I intend to finish this work by tomorrow. (मैं यह काम कल तक खत्म करने का इरादा रखता हूं। )
DONE TO FULFILL A PARTICULAR PURPOSE
एक खास उद्देश्य से किए गए कार्य को बताने के लिए 'intend to' का use किया जाता है।
• The Convention is intended to protect fundamental human rights. (कन्वेंशन का उद्देश्य मूलभूत मानवाधिकारों की रक्षा करना है।)
• Demonetisation was intended to reduce eliminate black money. (विमुद्रीकरण का उद्देश्य काले धन को खत्म करना था।)
• I agree that I intended to hurt his feelings.(मैं मानता हूं कि मेरा उद्देश्य उसकी भावनाओं को ठेस पहुँचाना था।)
MEANT FOR A PARTICULAR PERSON (or a group)
In such cases, 'intend to' is replaced by 'intended for'
• These schemes are intended for those people who are incapable of work.(ये योजनाएं उन लोगों के लिए हैं जो काम करने में असमर्थ हैं।)
• I followed the career that my father intended for me. (मैंने उस करियर का अनुसरण किया जो मेरे पिता मेरे लिए चुना।)
