Rules For Silent Letters - final edition

And we are finally here - the final leg of our journey to learn the rules for silent letters in English. So far, we have dealt with many and today we'll discuss some more. So without further ado, let's begin: SILENT H Okay, this one's the king. English language में ऐसे अनेकों शब्द हैं जिनकी spelling में letter 'h' आता है और उनमें से बहुत से शब्द ऐसे हैं जिन्हे pronounce करते समय 'h' silent होता है। These are the simple rules for the silent H: After W What - वट Whether - वेदर Why - वाय  In the form of 'th' English में 'th' को दो तरह से pronounce किया जा सकता है और उनमें से एक में letter 'h' को silent consider किया जाता है, या यूँ कहें कि ऐसे cases में 't' और 'h' को मिलाकर एक नया sound - द produce किया जाता है। Example: These - दीज़ This - दिस That - दैट At the beginning of many words There are many words in English where 'h' comes at the beginning of the spelling but is silent: Hour - आउअर Honest - ऑनेस्ट Heir - एर Remeber, ऐसे शब्दों की पहचान के लिए कोई विशेष rule नहीं है, you need to identify and make a note of them. SILENT K Now, this one's not that hard to get as there is one simple rule: K is not pronounced when it comes before N at the beginning of a word Learn with examples: Knee - नी Knife - नाइफ Knot - नॉट Knowledge - नॉलेज Knock - नॉक   And the list is endless, but you get it, right? SILENT L Silent 'K' की तरह letter 'L' को silent मानने के लिए भी एक simple सा rule है: Spelling में vowels A, O और U के बाद आने पर letter 'L' को pronounce नहीं किया जाता है। Could - कुड Would - वुड Balm - बाम Talk - टॉक Yolk - योक Folk - फोक But then, there are exceptions here: Bulk - बल्क Hold - होल्ड Mould - मोल्ड SILENT T This one has remained controversial in the past. अगर हम पुराने grammar rules की मानें तो ऐसे शब्द जिनका last syllable –sten, -ften, and –stle होता है, उनकी pronunciation में letter 't' को silent माना जाता है। जैसे की: Listen - लिसन Glisten - ग्लिसन Often - ऑफन Soften - सॉफन Hustle - हसल Whistle - विसल However, recent developments in the grammar rules have twitched the pronunciation of the syllable '-ften'. इसलिए modern grammar rules के according, syllable '-ften' में letter 't' को silent consider नहीं किया जाता, बल्कि इसे completely pronounce किया जाता है: Often - ऑफ्टन Soften - सॉफ्टन In short, ऑफन और ऑफ्टन - दोनों ही pronunciations को सही माना जाएगा; it's your choice to whether pronounce it or not. With 'ch' This one's a little confusing हम कह सकते हैं कि जब word spelling में 't' को 'ch' के साथ लिखा जाता है तो को pronounce करते समय ऐसा लगता है कि 't' silent है। However, if we listen to the pronunciation experts, when saying words with the ‘tch’ sound, a soft but not silent ‘t’ is pronounced. Too complicated! Either way, here's how the pronunciation goes: Watch - वॉच Itch - इच Sketch - स्केच Butcher - बुचर Don't forget to read our previous blogs of this series:  Silent Letter Rules – Part 1 Silent Letter Rules – Part 2
