Continuing with the never-ending thirst for phrases to embellish our day to day vocab, here are some more Phrases For Daily use: WRITE (someone or something) OFF Meaning: To treat like or decide that someone or something is not important or significant. (यह तय कर लेना कि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु महत्वपूर्ण नहीं है। ) When you write someone or something off, you are actually belittling its value. किसी परेशानी या किसी प्रकार की कमी के कारण व्यक्ति या वस्तु की अहमियत को कम कर देना ही 'write off' का अर्थ है। • Most critics wrote him off as a petty artist until he received a national award. (अधिकांश समीक्षकों ने उसे एक तुच्छ कलाकार समझा, जब तक कि उसे एक राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार नहीं मिल गया।) • A lot of parents tend to write creativity off as a successful career option for their children. (बहुत सारे अभिभावक रचनात्मकता को अपने बच्चों के लिए एक सफल करियर विकल्प के रूप में महत्तवता नही देते हैं।) (To be) AT LOGGERHEADS Meaning: To be in a conflict, a violent dispute or disagreement with someone. किसी के साथ गहन असहमति जताना या किसी विशेष बात पर कलह या विवाद करने व अड़ जाने की स्थिति को ही ‘at loggerheads’ कहा जाता है। Simply put, if two people or groups are at loggerheads, they disagree strongly about something which, most of the times, leads to an impasse or deadlock. यह स्थिति अक्सर दो parties के बीच तब पैदा होती है जब दोनो ही तरफ से दुसरे की बात को न मान कर अपनी बात पर अडिग रहा जाता है, जिसके कारण नतीजे पर पहुँच पाना असंभव हो जाता है। • The opposition party is at loggerheads with the ruling government over the new bill. (विपक्षी दल नए बिल को लेकर सत्तारुढ़ सरकार के साथ विवाद में है।) • Sam is at loggerheads with his mother on reducing his pocket money. (Sam अपने जेब खर्च को कम करने पर अपनी माँ के साथ बेहद असहमत है।) (To be) WORTH ONE’S SALT Meaning: To be efficient or competent in your job/profession.(अपनी नौकरी / काम /  पेशे में कुशल या सक्षम होना ) In Roman times, and throughout the Middle Ages, salt was a valuable commodity and was also referred to as “white gold.” नमक की इतनी value होने का कारण यह था की इसका प्रयोग meat और अन्य खाद्य सामग्री को preserve करने में किया जाता था । इसी कारण Roman soldiers को कभी-कभी वेतन के रूप में नमक दिया जाता था । या कह सकते हैं कि जो वेतन उन्हें मिलता था, उसका प्रयोग मुख्य रूप से नमक खरीदने में किया जाता था। इसी कारण salary को salt money भी कहा जाता था। We don’t get salt as salary anymore but somehow, salt is equivalent to something that a person gets as a salary for his job.   So long story short, to be 'worth one's salt' is to be worth one's pay/salary. यदि आप अपना काम करने में कुशल हैं, तो निश्चित रूप से आप अपने वेतन के हक़दार हैं। This phrase is used to compliment someone for his/her work, skills, efficiency, etc. • Any accountant worth his/her salt should be aware of the latest changes in taxation. (किसी भी सक्षम अकाउंटेंट को कराधान में नवीनतम परिवर्तनों के बारे में पता होना चाहिए।) • Any political leader worth his/her salt fulfils the promises made during the election campaign. (कोई भी कुशल नेता चुनाव प्रचार के दौरान किये अपने वादों को पूरा करता है।) FOR WHAT/ WHATEVER IT'S WORTH Meaning: किसी कार्य के लाभकारी परिणामों के बारे में अनिश्चित्ता की भावना। This phrase is used when you are unsure about the importance or usefulness of the outcomes. (to replace - “I am not sure but...”) • For what it’s worth, I think you should not trust that man. (पता नहीं क्यों मगर, मुझे लगता है कि आपको उस आदमी पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए।) यह ऐसी स्थिति में भी प्रयोग किया जाता है जहां आपका कुछ कहना न कहना वर्तमान स्थिति को नहीं बदल सकता, लेकिन फिर भी आप एक तस्सली देने की उम्मीद से अपनी बात को कह देते हैं। • For whatever it’s worth, at least we tried our best. (जो भी हुआ, कम से कम हमने अपनी पूरी कोशिश की।) • For what it’s worth, I apologize to you.
