Little and Few, both belong to a group of words called QUANTIFIERS.
Quantifiers यानी 'परिमाणक शब्द' उन्हें कहा जाता है जिनसे हमे किसी वस्तु की संख्या या मात्रा का पता चलता है।
परिमानकों का वाक्य में प्रयोग ज़्यादातर संघ्या यानी noun की quantity के बारे में बताने के लिए किया जाता है।
Coming back to our topic,
Little और Few दोनों ही एक प्रकार से नकारात्मक भावना को दर्शाने के लिए use किए जाते हैं क्योंकि दोनों का अर्थ किसी प्रकार की कमी या अभाव से जुड़ा है।
And that's where we get confused.
Although these words have similar meanings, you should NEVER USE THEM INTERCHANGEABLY.
Why?
Well, let's see why...
LITTLE VS. FEW
LITTLE
It's used only for uncountable nouns.
किसी भी अगणनीय संघ्या की मात्रा में कमी के बारे में बताने के लिए हमेशा 'little' का प्रयोग करना चाहिए।
• I’ve got little money left as savings. (money = uncountable noun)
• मेरे पास बचत के रूप में बहुत कम पैसे हैं।
• There is little milk left in the bottle. (milk = uncountable noun)
• बोतल में थोड़ा दूध बचा हुआ है।
FEW
Used with plural countable nouns only.
किसी भी गणनीय संघ्या की संख्या में कमी को दर्शाने के लिए 'few' का use करना उचित है।
• A few friends of mine live in London.(friends = plural and countable)
• मेरे कुछ दोस्त लंदन में रहते हैं।
• There are few mistakes in your article. (mistakes = plural and countable)
• आपके लेख में कुछ गलतियां हैं।
Little or A little
There is a slight difference of context between the usage of 'little' and 'a little'.
Little का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब कोई वस्तु आपके पास पर्याप्त मात्रा में उपलब्ध न हो यानी बिल्कुल ना के बराबर होना।
A little का प्रयोग तब करते हैं जब वस्तु की मात्रा कम या थोड़ी हो लेकिन आपकी आवश्यकता के हिसाब से पर्याप्त रहे।
In simpler terms, we can say that:
| LITTLE = not much/almost nothing/not enough
A LITTLE = some/a small amount/good enough |
Let's understand the difference with some examples:
• There was little time given to take the decision.
• निर्णय लेने के लिए कम समय दिया गया था।
Little time = almost no time was given.(conveys a negative idea)
(यहाँ little शब्द का प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि दिया गया समय निर्णय लेने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं था।)
• He gave me a little time to take the decision.
• उसने मुझे फैसला लेने के लिए थोड़ा समय दिया।
A little time = some or almost enough time was given.(conveys a positive idea)
(यहाँ a little के प्रयोग से यह पता चलता है कि फैसला करने के लिए पर्याप्त समय दिया गया है।)
Few or A few
The difference between these two is similar to that of 'little' and 'a little'.
यदि गिनती या संख्या अपर्याप्त या बहुत कम है यानी एक और दो या फिर ना के बराबर, तब हम 'few' का प्रयोग करते हैं।
यदी संख्या पर्याप्त या एक और दो से कुछ ज़्यादा है (परन्तु बहुत ज़्यादा नहीं) तब 'a few' का प्रयोग करना उचित रहता है।
| FEW = not many/ almost nothing / shortage
A FEW = some/a small number/ almost enough |
Here are some examples that'll help you understand better:
• Few days are left for exam preparation.
• परीक्षा की तैयारी के लिए कुछ ही दिन शेष हैं।
Few days = not many or enough days.
(Few days का अर्थ है कि तैयारी के लिए बहुत ही कम या ना के बराबर दिन बचे हैं।)
• A few days are left for exam preparation.
• परीक्षा की तैयारी के लिए अभी कुछ दिन बचे हैं।
(A few days के प्रयोग से पता चलता है कि तैयारी के लिए कुछ मगर पर्याप्त दिन बचे हैं।)
