Had better is an expression which is used in a specific situation to give strong advice or warning with negative effects.
Had better का use general situations में नहीं बल्कि specific situations (विशेष स्थिति) में किया जाता है। दूसरे शब्दों में कहें तो जब situation काफी serious या dangerous हो तब Had Better का use किया जाता है। इस expression को use करने का कारण किसी person को सलाह ( advice) देना या चेतावनी (warning) देना या फिर सुझाव (recommendation) देना होता है। Had Better का मतलब है कि अगर कोई दी गयी सलाह या चेतावनी को follow नहीं करता तो उसके बुरे परिणाम (negative effects/ consequences) हो सकते हैं।
Structure for making sentences
Subject + had better + base verb + object – positive sentences
Subject + had better + not + base verb – negative sentences
Had better का use immediate future के लिए होता है लेकिन verb की form हमेशा past की use होती है, Have better possible नहीं है।
Example sentences:
There is heavy rain outside. You had better take an umbrella.
बाहर काफी/भारी बारिश हो रही है। बेहतर होगा तुम एक छाता ले लो।
You had better leave me alone for a few minutes.
बेहतर होगा मुझे थोड़ी देर के लिए अकेला छोड़ दो।
You had better not drink more beer. You’ll be sick.
बेहतर होगा कि तुम जयादा बीयर मत पीओ। तुम बीमार हो जाओगे।

यह एक बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण रहस्य है। बेहतर होगा कि आप किसी से न कहें।
Informal English में had better की जगह had best का भी use किया जा सकता है। Had best का भी वही मतलब है जो had better का है। Had better/best को informal situations में ’d better/best भी लिखा जा सकता है।
Example sentence:-
I am not allowed to come back home late. I’d best go now.
मुझे देर से घर वापस आने की अनुमति नहीं है। अब मेरे लिए जाना बेहतर होगा।
इसी तरह से had better के interrogative sentences भी बनाए जा सकते हैं।

Had we better stop arguing so much over such a small matter?
क्या एक छोटे से मुद्दे पर बहस बंद करना बेहतर होगा?
Negative questions वाले sentences में had not contracted/short form में भी लिखा जा सकता है, जो कि subject से पहले आएगा ।

क्या बेहतर नहीं होगा कि वे हमें बताएं अगर वे आ रहे हैं?
Hadn’t we betterinform them where we are going?
क्या बेहतर नहीं होगा कि हम उन्हें सुचना दे दें कि हम कहाँ जा रहे हैं?
