Today we'll GET TO KNOW about some phrasal verbs. What are they? जब एक 'verb' यानी क्रिया को किसी दूसरे element, जैसे कि क्रिया-विशेषण (adverb) या पूर्वसर्ग (preposition) या फिर दोनों, के साथ combine कर एक अर्थपूर्ण वाक्यांश बनाया जाता है, तो उसे PHRASAL VERB कहते हैं।

PHRASAL VERBS: • VERB + ADVERB = look after • VERB + PREPOSITION = put on • VERB + ADVERB + PREPOSITION = look down on

Phrasal verbs कोई अनोखा concept नहीं है, बल्कि आप जाने-अनजाने प्रतिदिन बातचीत के दौरान अनेकों phrasal verbs का प्रयोग करते हैं। फर्क सिर्फ इतना है कि कुछ phrasal verbs का अर्थ बहुत direct और समझने में आसान होता है परन्तु ज़्यादातर idiomatic nature के होते हैं; इसलिए सिर्फ शब्दों के basis पर इनका अर्थ व प्रयोग समझना कठिन है। Since there is no limit to how many phrasal verbs are there in the English language, we can't learn all in one go. Today we'll learn about phrasal verbs that use the verb: GET GET IN To arrive at some place like home or an office • What time did you get in last night? (कल रात तुम किस वक़्त घर वापस आए थे?) The time a vehicle like a train or an aeroplane arrives • The plane going to London will get in at 5 pm.(लंदन जाने वाला विमान शाम 5 बजे तक आ जाएगा।) To succeed in entering a place using force or a trick • The thieves must have got in through the bathroom window. ( चोरों ने ज़रूर बाथरूम की खिड़की से अंदर प्रवेश किया होगा।) To be elected in a political party • Their party got in with 50% of the total votes. (उनकी पार्टी 50% मतों से चुनी गयी।) GET OUT Leave an enclosed place • I want you to get out right now. (मैं चाहता हूं कि आप अभी के अभी बाहर निकल जाएं।) Spend a good time by going to different places • They go out almost every night. (वे लगभग हर रात घूमने जाते हैं।) When a secret information or a news leak • I can't believe that their divorce news got out so fast. (मुझे विश्वास नहीं हो रहा है कि उनके तलाक की खबर इतनी जल्दी बहार आ गयी।) Avoid or escape (a duty or responsibility) • Her innocent eyes always help her to get out of scolding. (उसकी मासूम आँखें हमेशा उसे डांट खाने से बचा लेती हैं।) GET ON Have a good rapport with someone • They always get on well with each other. (उन दोनों की हमेशा एक दूसरे से अच्छी पटती है।) Make progress in a specified way • How are you getting on with the job hunt? (आपकी नौकरी की तलाश में क्या प्रगति हो रही है?) Continuing a work after an interruption • I can't come as I have to get on with my report.(मैं नहीं आ सकता क्योंकि मुझे अपनी रिपोर्ट पर काम करना है।) Remind someone to do something quickly when it's getting late • You have wasted too much time getting ready; now get on with it! (तुमने तैयार होने में बहुत समय बर्बाद कर दिया है, अब जल्दी करो!) GET DOWN Cause someone to be depressed • This movie always gets me down. (यह फिल्म हमेशा मुझे निराश करती है।) Concentrate attention towards one particular task • It's time I got down to some serious work. (अब समय है कि मैं गंभीरता से काम करूँ।) Reach end point of dealing with something • We have got down to these final results. (हम इन अंतिम परिणामों पर पहुंचे हैं।) GET AT Reach or gain access to (something) • I've put the cake on a high shelf where kids can't get at it. (मैंने केक को एक ऊँचे शेल्फ पर रखा है जहां बच्चे उस तक नहीं पहुंच सकते।) Imply something or reach a conclusion indirectly • I don't understand what you are getting at. (मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा कि आप क्या कहना चाह रहे हैं।) Criticise a person repeatedly • Why do you keep getting at me? (तुम बार बार मेरी आलोचना क्यों करते हो?) GET OFF Escape a punishment • She is fortunate that she got off with just a warning. (वह भाग्यशाली है कि उसे सिर्फ एक चेतावनी देकर जाने दिया गया।) Leave a place, usually in order to start a journey • If we want to reach there in time, we better get off in an hour. (यदि हमें वहां समय पर पहुंचना है, तो बेहतर है कि हम एक घंटे में निकल जाएं।) Leave work place (usually at the end of the day) • Can you get off early from office today? (क्या आप आज दफ़तर से जल्दी आ सकते हैं?)
