FOR Vs SINCE - let the battle begin! Well, not literally. आज हम For and Since की बात TIME यानि समय के context में करेंगे। अक्सर इन दोनों शब्दों का प्रयोग time reference के लिए किया जाता है but many are confused between the two. FOR

Time के context में FOR का use समय की एक अवधि या मात्रा (a period/ amount of time) को दर्शाने के लिए किया जाता है और ऐसा ज़रूरी नहीं कि यह अवधि निश्चित हो। It could be seconds, minutes, hours, days, months or even years. Example: • I have been living in this country for thirty years. (मै इस देश में तीस साल से रह रहा हूँ।) • I will come to the party, but just for an hour. (मैं पार्टी में आऊंगा, लेकिन सिर्फ एक घंटे के लिए।) FOR का use अस्पष्ट (vague) period of time की बात करने के लिए भी किया जा सकता है। जैसे - for the weekend, for ages, for a long time Now, where there is time, there is a TENSE; an English tense So, when we talk about tenses, FOR can be used in all three of them. Past • We were good friends for many years before she moved abroad. (उसके विदेश चले जाने से पहले हम कई साल तक अच्छे दोस्त थे।) • We stayed in this town for 9 years. (हम इस शहर में 9 साल तक रहे।) Present • We have been coming to this hotel for almost three weeks. (हम लगभग तीन सप्ताह से इस होटल में आ रहे हैं।) • She has been studying for the last 4 hours. (वह पिछले 4 घंटे से पढ़ाई कर रही है।) • We have known her for two years. (हम उसे दो साल से जानते हैं।) Future • I'll stay here for just an hour. (मैं यहाँ सिर्फ एक घंटे के लिए रुकूंगा।) • Next month I am going out of town for four days. (अगले महीने मैं चार दिनों के लिए शहर से बाहर जा रही हूँ।)

SINCE

Since is used to tell about a particular point in time like last night, 2008 or morning, etc. यानि Since का प्रयोग वर्तमान में चल रहे कार्य या घटना के शुरू होने का समय बताने के लिए किया जाता है। Since can refer to: • A point after a specific time or event in the past • A particular point when something beginning in the past and is still going on in the present. In short, जब हम किसी ऐसे कार्य की बात करते हैं जिसे past में शुरू किया गया था और जो अभी तक जारी है, तब हमें since का use करना चाहिए। वाक्य में since का प्रयोग present and past tense के साथ होता है। जैसे - • I have lived in Delhi since 1997. (मैं 1997 से दिल्ली में रहता हूं।) • I have been trying to call you since yesterday.
