Figure of Speech - Part 2

I hope you all enjoyed reading our last blog on various commonly used Figure Of Speech. To recall, Figure Of Speech ऐसे words या phrases को कहा जाता है जिनका असल meaning उनके शाब्दिक अर्थ यानी literal meaning से अलग हो। Let's take a step forward and learn some more about, not so commonly known, Figure of Speech. EUPHEMISM There are certain words and phrases in the English language that comes with a negative connotation and should not be used in a polite conversation. Euphemism is a mild substitute for a harsh or rude expression. कठोर शब्दों के स्थान पर मधुर भाषा का प्रयोग करना ही यूफमिज़म है। Example: Domestic help = house servant or maid (घर में काम करने वाला नौकर) Couch potato = lazy person (आलसी) To let someone go = to fire someone (नौकरी से निकालना) Over the hill = for someone who is above the age of 50 or 60 (बुढ़ापे की और बढ़ता हुआ व्यक्ति) IRONY एक ऐसी situation जिसमें परिणाम आपकी intention यानी सोच से बिल्कुल अलग या विपरीत आ जाए, तो उसे irony कहा जाता है। Example: • The fire station burned down. (फायर स्टेशन में आग लग गयी।) Fire stations का काम होता है दूसरी जगहों पर लगी आग को बुझाना, खुद fire station में ही आग लग जाना बहुत ही unexpected होगा और ऐसी situation को ironical कहा जाएगा। Some more examples of Situational Irony: • The pilot had fear of heights. • The cobbler's children have no shoes. • His Facebook post was about how useless Facebook is. • A member of PETA wore leather shoes to the meeting. In the context of spoken language, irony का एक meaning यह भी है कि satirical or funny अंदाज़ में ऐसे शब्दों का use करना जो आपकी बात के मतलब से विपरीत (opposite) हों। Examples of verbal irony: • This bed is soft like a brick. (यह बिस्तर एक ईंट की तरह नरम है।) • Looking at her son's messy room, Mother said, "Wow, you could win an award for cleanliness!" (अपने बेटे के बिखरे हुए गंदे कमरे को देखते हुए माँ ने कहा, "वाह, तुम तो सफाई के लिए एक पुरस्कार जीत सकते हो!") • The President said, "welcome to my humble abode." (राष्ट्रपति ने कहा, "मेरे गरीब-खाने में आपका स्वागत है।") ONOMATOPOEIA Onomatopoeia refers to a word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing. आवाज़ या ध्वनि को शब्द का रूप देकर लिखना या बोलना ही Onomatopoeia कहलाता है। जैसे: Sounds made by things: Rustling Kaboom or Boom! Honking Murmur Animal sounds: MOO (cows) MEOW (cat) HISS (snake) BAA (sheep) OXYMORON जब दो विपरीत (opposite) शब्दों के वाक्य में एक दूसरे के साथ use किया जाए तो उस figure of speech को oxymoron कहा जाता है। Examples: Same difference. Falsely true or Truely false Deafening silence Bittersweet Passive aggressive Walking dead Original copy UNDERSTATEMENT As the name suggests, किस भी बात या वस्तु का महत्त्व कम करके बताना ही understatement कहा जाता है। Example: • If I say that her resignation was a shock then would be an understatement; the truth is that there was a panic in the office. (अगर मैं कहूं कि उसका इस्तीफा एक झटका था, तो यह एक understatement होगी; सच पूछो तो office में हलचल मच गयी थी।) PARADOX Paradox एक ऐसी situation या statement को कहा जाता है जिसके होने की संभावना बिल्कुल ना के बराबर हो क्योंकि उस situation या statement में दो विपरीत बातें या facts मौजूद हों। Some common examples of paradoxical statements: • This is the beginning of the end. (यह अंत की शुरुआत है।) • My job is to do nothing. (मेरा काम है कुछ ना करना। ) • There is only one rule that there are no rules. (केवल एक नियम है कि कोई नियम नहीं है।) I hope you all enjoyed learning about different types of figures of speech.
