COOKING Idioms and Phrases


After learning certain words and terms that are used while cooking in our previous blogs, let's take a step further and learn a few cooking idioms and phrases. Read on! BOIL OVER We use this phrase to express the sudden increase in the intensity of some strong emotions, especially anger, up to a point where it becomes uncontrollable. जब कोई अपना आपा खो बैठे यानि अपने गुस्से को नियंत्रित नहीं कर सके और अचानक बहस या लड़ाई शुरू कर दे, उस situation को define करने के लिए आप इस phrase का कर सकते हैं।  • He could not stand his defeat, and his anger boiled over in front of everyone. (वह अपनी हार बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सका और सबके सामने ही उसका गुस्सा फुट पड़ा।) SIMMER DOWN This is used in an opposite context to the previous one. Simmer down का अर्थ है अपनी strong emotions या अपने गुस्से को काबू कर लेना और शांत हो जाना।  • Simmer down and get on with your work; getting angry won't make a difference. (शांत हो जाओ और अपना काम करते रहो; गुस्सा होने से कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ेगा।) IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO... इस phrase का उसे तब किया जाता है जब आप किसी मुद्दे की essence यानी सार के बारे में बात करते हैं।  जैसे कि यदि आप किसी problem में फंसे हैं तो उस परेशानी के मुख्य कारण या कारणों को बताने के लिए इस phrase का use कर सकते हैं : • The whole problem boils down to one thing - lack of money. (यह पूरी समस्या एक बात पर आकर टिकती है - पैसे की कमी।) HALF-BAKED  A half-baked idea or plan is something that has not been thought through and lacks a sound basis. ऐसे ideas, proposals या philosophies जिनके बारे में पर्याप्त सोच विचार नहीं किया गया हो, उन्हें half-baked कहा जाता है।  It's also synonymous with the word foolish. • According to the opposition, the government has formulated a half-baked scheme to tackle corruption. (विपक्ष के अनुसार, सरकार ने भ्रष्टाचार से निपटने के लिए एक बिना सोची समझी योजना तैयार की है।) TO GRILL SOMEONE किसी को grill करने का अर्थ है उससे लगातार व लंबे समय तक पूछताछ करना या इतने सारे सवाल पूछना की वह जवाब देते-देते परेशान हो जाए।   This technique comes in handy when you want someone to confess to their wrong deeds and is often used for criminals, etc. • After being grilled by the police for two days, he confessed his crime.(दो दिनों तक पुलिस द्वारा लगातार पूछताछ किए जाने के बाद, उसने अपना अपराध कबूल कर लिया।) • As soon as I come home, my mother starts to grill me about what I learned that day at school. (जैसे ही मैं घर आता हूँ, मेरी मां मुझसे लगातार सवाल पूछने लग जाती हैं कि मैंने स्कूल में क्या सीखा।) TO JUMP OUT OF THE FRYING PAN AND INTO THE FIRE इस idiom का अर्थ है एक बुरी स्थिति से निकल कर उससे भी बदतर हालात में पहुँच जाना।  This can be aptly used for someone who runs from a bad situation but lands with an even worse one. • She thought her tactics would get her out of trouble, but she jumped out the frying pan and into the fire.
