Have you heard about contronyms or have any idea what they are? Well, I'm not sure if you have heard this term before but trust me you already know what it's about. सरल शब्दों में कहें तो, contronyms वे शब्द होते हैं जिनके एक से अधिक अर्थ होते हैं; लेकिन, contronyms की एक खासियत है जो उन्हें unique बनाती है और वो यह कि contronyms के case में एक ही शब्द के दो अर्थ एक दूसरे के opposite होते हैं। इसी खासियत के कारण Contronyms को 'auto-antonyms' यानी 'खुद का ही विपरीत शब्द' भी कहा जाता है। Lemme break it down for you: Contro = 'CONTRADICTORY' (or opposite) Nym = 'NAME' FASCINATING, isn't it? In a way, contronyms को homonyms भी कहा जा सकता है क्योंकि यहाँ शब्दों की spelling तो एक है लेकिन अर्थ different हैं। Let's explore some commonly used CONTRONYMS: TO CLEAVE   To cling to something or join/ stick two things together - किसी चीज़ से लिपटना या दो चीजों को एक साथ जोड़ना या चिपकाना। • The monkey's baby was cleaving to his mother's body. ( बंदर का बच्चा अपनी माँ के शरीर से लिपटा हुआ था।)   To split something into parts (especially along a straight line) - दो हिस्सों में काटना या चीरना; विशेष रूप से एक सीधी रेखा में। • He borrowed my ax to cleave the wood for the bonfire. (उसने bonfire के लिए लकड़ी काटने/ चीरने के लिए मेरी कुल्हाड़ी उधार ली थी।) TRANSPARENT   Obvious or apparent (easily visible or understood - जो साफ़/ स्पष्ट दिखाई दे या समझ में आ जाए।  • It was transparent that she was lying. (स्पष्ट समझ आ रहा था कि वो झूठ बोल रही थी।)   Something so clear and see-through that it appears almost invisible - जो इतना साफ़ या पारदर्शी हो कि दिखाई ही न दे।  • I bumped into a transparent glass door. (मैं एक पारदर्शी कांच के दरवाज़े से टकरा गया।) LEFT    Past form of word leave which means to depart - चले जाना/ रवाना होना  •He left home early this morning. (वह तो आज सुबह ही घर से चला गया।)    Remains of something - कुछ बचा हुआ होना या एक जगह पर बने रहना (यानी चले जाना का opposite) • There is still a lot of food left in the kitchen. (रसोईघर में अभी भी बहुत सारे भोजन बाकी है।) • He never left my side in my bad times. (उसने कभी भी मेरे बुरे समय में मेरा साथ नहीं छोड़ा।) ROCK   Subtle side to side or 'to and fro' motion (gentle swinging) - सहज तरीके से झूला झुलना या झुलाना। • She rocked the baby in her arms all night long. (वह पूरी रात बच्चे को अपनी बाहों में झुलाती रही।)    An immobile solid mass of stone (or to be like one) - gentle swinging motion यानी झूला झुलाने के विपरीत, rock का एक अर्थ स्थिर चट्टान भी होता है।   • A big rock blocked the whole road traffic. (एक बड़ी चट्टान ने पूरे सड़क यातायात को अवरुद्ध कर दिया।) TO BUCKLE    To get dislocated, bent out of shape or break under pressure/strain - दबाव में आकर किसी चीज़ का अपनी जगह से हिल जाना/ सरक जाना या टूट कर अलग हो जाना। • The doctor said that her shoulder bone has buckled due the accident. (डॉक्टर ने कहा कि दुर्घटना के कारण उसके कंधे की हड्डी टूट/ सरक गई है।)    Buckle, as a verb, also means: to fasten or secure something to one place using a buckle - किसी वस्तु को उसकी जगह से हिलने या सरकने से रोकने के लिए buckle यानी पेटी की मदद से उसे कस कर बांधना।   • The air hostess requested the passengers to buckle their seat belts before the plane's take-off.
