The use of a comma before and is one grammar rule that has been there for a while now but not all of us are aware of it. Generally, you don't see people using a comma before the word and. Are we supposed to do that? Let's find out. WHAT IS A COMMA? Comma का हिंदी में अर्थ है 'अल्पविराम' और जैसा की नाम से ही पता चलता है, अल्पविराम  का प्रयोग लिखते समय एक pause यानी ठहराव को दर्शाने के लिए किया जाता है। जब आप वार्तालाप करते हैं तो बहुत आसानी से शब्दों या clauses के बीच विराम ले सकते हैं परंतु लिखते समय pause को express करना possible नही है। And that's why we have comma. Now, the confusion arises between a comma and a full stop because both are punctuation marks that are used to take pauses. 'Comma' यानी अल्पविराम और 'full stop' यानी पूर्ण विराम के बीच एकमात्र अंतर यह है कि अल्पविराम थोड़े समय के pause को indicate करता है और यह दर्शाता है कि वाक्य अभी खत्म नहीं है, जबकि 'पूर्ण विराम' स्पष्ट रूप से बताता है कि वाक्य खत्म हो गया है। Now, what's all hoopla about this Comma Before AND? क्या आपने हाल ही में 'Oxford comma' या 'serial comma' के बारे में पढ़ा या सुना है? If yes then I'm sure that you must be super confused about it. Well, don't you worry because the OXFORD COMMA is just a fancy name for Comma Before AND. It's known as the Oxford comma because it was traditionally used by printers, readers, and editors at Oxford University Press. आइये सीखते हैं ऑक्सफ़ोर्ड कॉमा के  uses: IN A LIST जब किसी list में दो से ज़्यादा items हों तब लिस्ट के आखिरी item से पहले and का प्रयोग होता है और इस and से पहले आता है oxford comma. • I bought some earrings, bracelets, dresses, and a pair of sunglasses. • मैंने कुछ बालियां, कंगन, कपड़े, और धूप के चश्मे ख़रीदे। • I need some fruits, bread, mayonnaise, and a bottle of chocolate syrup. • मुझे कुछ फल, ब्रेड, मेयोनेज़ और चॉकलेट सिरप की एक बोतल चाहिए। THREE OR MORE THINGS जब आप एक sentence में तीन या ज़्यादा चीजों का उल्लेख करते हैं, जैसे की: • He is a painter, sculptor, and architect. • वह एक चित्रकार, मूर्तिकार और वास्तुकार हैं। • My parents are very caring, loving, and generous. • मेरे माता-पिता बहुत ही देखभाल करने वाले, प्यारे और उदार हैं। यहाँ ध्यान रखने की बात है की sentence में तीन या तीन से ज़्यादा items होने ज़रूरी हैं। यदि आप दो items की बात करें तब सिर्फ and का प्रयोग करते हैं और oxford comma का नही । Correct   I need a pencil and a pen. Incorrect I need a pencil, and a pen. Since the usage of oxford comma is not quite popular, it would not be totally wrong if you refrain from using it. परंतु कुछ situations में oxford comma का प्रयोग misunderstandings दूर करने के लिए ज़रूरी होता है। • This dress is available in black and white, red and yellow, and blue and pink. • यह पोशाक काले और सफेद, लाल और पीले, और नीले और गुलाबी में उपलब्ध है। Here, it's clear that the dress comes in three combinations of colors. अगर आप यहाँ 'blue and pink' से पहले and शब्द के आगे comma use नही करते हैं तो confusion होने के chances बढ़ जाते हैं।   ...red and yellow, and blue and pink = It's clear that there are only two colors in one dress.   ....red and yellow and blue and pink = Appears that there are more than two colors in a single dress. However, except for certain situations, not using the comma before and is completely acceptable. But, if you do use it, make sure that you are consistent with it. Another case where you need to use a comma before and is: BETWEEN TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES वाक्य के वह खंड जो अपने आप में एक पूर्ण वाक्य होते हैं, उन्हें independent clause कहा जाता है। किंही दो independent clauses को एक वाक्य में जोड़ कर बोलने के लिए and का प्रयोग किया जाता है। इस स्थिति में and शब्द से पहले comma का प्रयोग करना आवश्यक है। • I'll meet you on Monday, and e-mail me the details of today's meeting.  • मैं सोमवार को आपसे मिलूंगा, और आज की मीटिंग का विवरण मुझे ई-मेल कर दें। • The rain stopped, and the sun came out again. • बारिश बंद हो गई, और सूरज फिर से बाहर आ गया।   Well, that was all about using the punctuation mark, 'COMMA' before 'AND'.
