Besides और Beside दोनों ही ना तो Homonyms हैं और न ही Homophones, लेकिन फिर भी इनकी spellings में similarity होने के कारण अक्सर इनके बीच confusion पैदा होती है। (CLICK HERE to learn more about Homophones) Well, the spelling difference between beside and besides is a small one, but their meanings and uses are quite different! Let's deal with this confusion and get rid of it. BASIC DIFFERENCE Beside is primarily used as a preposition whereas Besides is an adverb.

BESIDES = In addition to something BESIDE   = To be on the side

BESIDE

Beside शब्द का प्रयोग किसी वस्तु की location यानी स्थान बताने के लिए किया जाता है। The most common use of beside is as:   'NEXT TO' =  निकट, पास, समीप, साथ, बगल में USES: • I always sit beside my friend in class.(मैं कक्षा में हमेशा अपने दोस्त के साथ बैठती हूँ।) • I keep my glasses on a table beside my bed.(मैं अपने चश्मे मेरे बिस्तर के बगल में एक मेज पर रखता हूँ।) • The house beside the road was empty.(सड़क के पास का घर खाली था।) • She is standing beside that building.(वह उस इमारत के समीप/निकट खड़ी है।)

Sometimes, 'beside' can be figuratively used to depict 'comparison' जिस तरह आप दो चीज़ों को साथ रखकर उनकी तुलना कर सकते हैं, इसी तरह वाक्य में तुलनात्मक भाव लाने के लिए भी 'beside' शब्द का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

• These problems seem petty beside ( = compared to) the profits we are going to make.  • ये समस्याएं होने वाले मुनाफे के सामने बहुत छोटी लग रही हैं।

BESIDES

Besides का प्रयोग preposition और दोनों की तरह किया जा सकता है, हालांकि ज़्यादातर इसका प्रयोग adverb के रूप में ही किया जाता है। Let's learn with a few examples: AS AN ADVERB   BESIDES = in addition to OR to except(के अतिरिक्त/ साथ-साथ, को छोड़कर ) • Nobody came on time besides the teacher.(शिक्षक को छोड़कर कोई भी समय पर नहीं आया) • She can speak English and French besides her mother tongue.(वह अपनी मातृभाषा के अतिरिक्त अंग्रेजी और फ्रेंच बोल सकती है) • Besides the award, he got a one-year contract with the music company.(पुरस्कार के साथ-साथ, उन्हें संगीत कंपनी के साथ एक वर्ष का अनुबंध मिला।) AS A PREPOSITION   BESIDES = apart from (के अलावा) • I have no other family besides my parents.(मेरे माता-पिता के अलावा मेरा कोई अन्य परिवार नहीं है।) • Besides being a painter, he also writes poems.(चित्रकार होने के अलावा वह कविताएँ लिखते हैं।) • I haven't told anyone besides you.(मैंने तुम्हारे अलावा किसी को नहीं बताया है) BESIDES का प्रयोग informally एक और तरह से भी किया जाता है: to introduce additional information that supports your previous one. • I’m too tired to go swimming; besides, the water is too cold.(मैं तैराकी जाने के लिए बहुत थक गया हूँ; और तो और, पानी बहुत ठंडा है।) • It was too late for breakfast and besides, Sam had already called the taxi.(नाश्ता करने के लिए बहुत देर हो चुकी थी और ऊपर से Sam ने पहले से ही टैक्सी को बुला लिया था।) Well, I hope we cleared the confusion to some extent.
