Apostrophe: Do's and Don'ts

हमारे लास्ट ब्लॉग में हमने बात की थी apostrophe के basic uses के बारे में। Today we'll get to learn some more complex details about this ever so confusing punctuation mark. जैसा की आप जानते हैं apostrophe का प्रयोग ज़्यादातर possession दर्शाने के लिए किया जाता है। For example: • This is Ram's car. (यह राम की गाड़ी है।) • What is the topic for tomorrow's test? (कल की परीक्षा का विषय क्या है?) But this was just about singular nouns where most of the times you can just add an apostrophe+s and you are good to go. But what about plural nouns, or the words that end with an s (in general)? When it comes to an apostrophe, what are the Do's and Don'ts?   WITH SINGULAR and PLURAL NOUNS Plural nouns के साथ apostrophe use करने के rules singular nouns से थोड़े अलग हैं। Plural nouns ending in '-s' Normally, plural nouns यानी बहुवचन संघ्या वाले शब्द के अंत में 's' लगाया जाता है। That's usually how we know that the noun is more than one in number. Ex. Dogs, Girls, Boys, Teachers, etc. -s ending plural nouns के साथ केवल apostrophe का प्रयोग किया जाता है। ऐसे nouns के साथ apostrophe+s का use करना गलत है। Incorrect She lives in a girls's hostel. Correct   She lives in a girls' hostel. (वह एक लड़कियों के छात्रावास में रहती है।) Incorrect Teachers's room is on that side. Correct   Teachers' room is on that side. (शिक्षकों का कमरा उस तरफ है।) Plural nouns not ending in '-s' जिन plural noun words के अंत में '-s' नहीं लगाया जाता है, उनके साथ apostrophe+s का use किया जाता है।  Ex. Children, People, Women • I write children's story books. (मैं बच्चों की कहानियों की किताबें लिखती हूँ।) • The new law will help protect women's rights. (नया कानून महिलाओं के अधिकारों की सुरक्षा में मदद करेगा।) As stated earlier, with singular nouns, an apostrophe+s is used to show possession. But, there is one exception: Singular nouns ending in '-s' कुछ ऐसे singular noun words होते हैं जिनके अंत में 's' आता है, जैसे की: Charles (name of a person) Paris (name of a place) Class, Hills, Systems, etc. What you do with these words is a judgment call. हालांकी इन शब्दों के साथ apostrophe+s का use करना गलत नहीं होगा, लेकिन कभी-कभी बोलते समय end में double 's' का sound सुनने में थोड़ा अजीब लग सकता है। So it's your choice if your write Charles's or Charles'. However, it's advised that we use only the apostrophe and not apostrophe+s, especially with proper nouns. इस confusion को दूर करने के लिए एक छोटी सी tip यह है की 's लगाने से पहले शब्द को बोल कर देख लें। यदि आपको अंत में double 's' pronounce करने में difficulty होती है या वह सुनने में awkward लगे, तो लिखने में केवल apostrophe (without s) का use करें और अगर नहीं तो apostrophe+s का प्रयोग करें।    WITH POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS Since possessive pronouns indicate possession (hence the name), one need not use any apostrophe with them. Pronoun यानी सर्वनाम उन शब्दों को कहा जाता है जो वाक्य में संघ्या के स्थान पर इस्तेमाल किए जाते हैं। Back to possessive pronouns, imagine करें की आपके पास एक किताब है और आपको अपने सामने बैठे दोस्त से यह पूछना है कि क्या यह किताब उसकी है, तब आप कुछ इस तरह से प्रश्न करेंगे: You: Is this book yours? (क्या यह पुस्तक तुम्हारी है?) Your friend: Yes, it's mine. (हाँ, यह मेरी है।) यहां note करें कि yours और mine शब्द हमे यह पता लगाने में मदद कर रहे हैं कि किताब किसकी है। So, they are possessive pronouns. You should never use an apostrophe with possessive pronouns. किसी pronoun को possessive pronoun बनाने के लिए उसके अंत में केवल 's' लगाया जाता है, apostrophe नही। YOUR → YOURS HER → HERS OUR → OURS THEIR → THEIRS Exception: Since there is already an 's' at the end of HIS, don't add another one. HIS → HIS • Yours faithfully. (आपका आभारी) • This house is hers/his. (यह घर उसका है) Also,  WHO →  WHOSE MY → MINE Q. Whose pen is this? A. This pen is mine?   INDIVIDUAL or JOINT POSSESSIONS When one thing belongs to two or more people जब भी एक ही वस्तु की possession एक से ज़्यादा व्यक्तियों को लेकर दर्शानी हो तो वहां वाक्य में लिखे गए second noun के बाद apostrophe use करें। • Sam and Nancy's home is beautiful. (Sam और Nancy का घर खूबसूरत है।) इस तरह से वाक्य लिखने से यह पता चलता है कि Sam और Nancy दोनों एक ही घर share करते हैं। When separate things that belong to different people If you write the same sentence this way: • Sam's and Nancy's home is beautiful. (Sam का और Nancy का घर खूबसूरत है।) Here, the sentence depicts that there are two beautiful houses, one is Sam's house and one is that of Nancy's.   WITH NNON-LIVING THINGS अजीवित/ निर्जीव वस्तुओं के साथ apostrophe का use नहीं किया जाता है। In such cases, it's always better to rephrase the sentence. Incorrect The book's price is 500 rupees. Correct   The price of the book is 500 rupees. (पुस्तक की कीमत 500 रुपये है।) Well, we have covered almost everything about the Do's and Don'ts of Apostrophe.
