A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to describe something by comparing it to something totally different, so much so that the two things that are not at all common in the literal sense. Metaphor यानि रूपक अलंकार का प्रयोग दो ऐसी वस्तुओं के बीच तुलना करने के लिए किया जाता है जिनका वास्तविकता में कोई ताल्लुक नही होता जैसे की: Heartbreak = दिल टूटना दिल टूटना एक metaphor है अत्यंत दुःख को ज़ाहिर करने के लिए। We all know that your heart is not literally broken into pieces; you just feel hurt and sad and that's what has been compared with the pain of a broken heart. Though metaphors are all about describing by comparing, they should never be taken seriously as it won't make any sense and you'll be left wondering and confused. Metaphors are generally used in poetry but other than that, अगर आप अपनी आम बातचीत में भी सही वक़्त पर सही metaphor का प्रयोग करेंगे तो इससे आपकी सीधी साधी बात का अंदाज़ भी बहुत दिलचस्प हो जाएगा। WHY USE METAPHORS? ♦ Expressions give effect to your statements. यदि आप एक simple तरीके से कोई बात को कहते हैं तो उससे न तो यह पता चलता है कि बात के पीछे क्या expression use किया गया है और न ही कही गयी बात कि intensity के बारे में बताया जा सकता है Metaphors help us to portray the exact intensity of our feelings. ♦ Also, Metaphors are made up of colorful words and phrases which sometimes can be quite funny and entertaining. ♦ Another good thing about metaphors is that in most of them, real life situations are used while making the comparisons. यदि आपने पहले कभी किसी particular metaphor को नही सुना है, आप फिर भी आसानी से यह idea लगा सकते हैं कि यह बात किसी sense में कही गई है। Now, there is a sea of metaphors out there, but then I can't tell you all of them. So, here I have a collection of few which will give you a fair idea of what metaphors are. In a nutshell = To summarize something ( संक्षेप में ) • In a nutshell, Jane's party was just boring. • कम शब्दों में कहूँ तो Jane कि पार्टी बहुत उबाऊ थी। Food for thought = Something that compels you to think about it ( कुछ ऐसा जो आपको सोचने के लिए प्रेरित करे ) • You must read this book, it's a food fo thought. • तुम्हे यह किताब ज़रूर पढ़नी चाहिए, यह तुम्हे सोच में डाल देगी। Sea of grief = Immense sorrow ( अत्यंत दुःख ) • I hope he comes out his sea of griefs. • मै उम्मीद करता हूँ कि वह इस शोक सागर से बाहर आ जाए। Love is a battlefield = Love is full of difficulties and challenges ( प्रेम संबंध कठिनाइयों और चुनौतियों से भरा होता है ) • After my experience, all I can say is that love is a battlefield. • अपने अनुभव के बाद मै यही कह सकता हूँ कि प्यार एक युद्ध के सामान है। Rollercoaster of emotions = a situation that makes you feel excited, exhilarated, happy or sad, disappointed, or desperate; all at the same time ( एक ऐसी स्तिथि जिसमें आप उत्साह, दुःख, ख़ुशी, निराशा आदि, सभी एक साथ महसूस करें ) • Last year was a like roller-coaster of emotions for me. • पिछला साल मेरे लिए भावनाओं के एक रोलर कोस्टर कि तरह रहा। Simmer down = to calm down ( शांत होना ) • Ever since I sent him to the boarding school, he has simmered down a lot. • जब से मैने उसे बोर्डिंग स्कूल में भेजा है, वह बहुत ही शांत होगया है। Sweet taste of success = The joy of being successful ( सफलता की ख़ुशी होना ) • After so much of hard work, Sally had the sweet taste of success. • कड़ी मेहनत के बाद Sally ने सफलता का मीठा स्वाद चखा। A house of cards = Something that is super delicate and weak ( बहुत ही नाज़ुक व कमज़ोर ) • Your plan sounds like a house of cards to me. • मुझे तुम्हारी योजना बहुत ही कमज़ोर लग रही है। A wooden face = An expressionless face ( एक भावशून्य चेहरा ) • The police officer listened to his lies with a wooden face. • पुलिस अधिकारी ने उसके सभी झूठों को बिना किसी प्रितिक्रिया के सुना। High and dry = When you feel hopeless and there is no one to help you ( जब आप निराश महसूस करें और कोई आपकी मदद के लिए न हो ) • I never thought that my best friend would leave me high and dry. • मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि मेरी सबसे अछि दोस्त ही मुझे अकेला हताश और निराश छोड़ जाएगी। Hopefully, this was helpful.
